to play every day. Although she was older than Wolfi, her brother soon caught up. When
Wolfi was five he could write some pretty pieces. Their dad had a plan, it was to go to
Europe and show the kings and queens how well his children could play. They toured Europe
and England for many years. Their dad thought it was time to go back to Salzburg but a
horrible thing happened when they reached Vienna. Mozart caught small pox. All of Europe
knew their favorite miracle boy could die and he lay in a darkened room attended by a
doctor, their dad, their mom and a nurse. after many weeks by the grace of God he
recovered. When Maria was sixteen, too old to be applauded as a "miracle child",
she retired from the musical stage to become a teacher of the pianoforte. When Mozart was
sixteen, too old to be a "miracle boy", he started writing operas for the
Archbishop. Their dad thought Mozart should go to Italy to see and hear Italian opera. So
once again he packed up for the long journey but this time he would be going without
Maria.
